Optoelectronic Technologies
for the Oil and Gas Industry 2009
The 2009 Optoelectronic Technologies for the Oil and Gas Industry technical meeting was co-sponsored by the Institute of Physics Instrument Science and Technology group (ISAT) and FMC Technologies and supported by the National Subsea Research Institute.
The meeting was held in Aberdeen, the centre of the U.K. oil and gas industry, on the 26th of November 2009. The meeting had sessions on downhole, subsea and surface applications of optoelectronic technologies and provided a timely forum for reviewing some recent developments in optoelectronic technology relevant to current and future oil and gas industry requirements.
The growth of optoelectronic technology within the oil and gas industry was reflected in the broad range of technologies and applications addressed, which included: the challenges for optoelectronics in the oil and gas Industry, downhole fibre optic sensors, subsea surveillance, underwater radar, wirelessly enabled optoelectronic systems, subsea optical connectors, underwater 3D imaging and oil in water monitoring.
The meeting comprised 15 presentations, including contributions from Canada, the U.S.A., Norway, Italy, France, Denmark and Germany. The meeting attracted an audience of 84 made up predominantly from industry, but with around 20 people from academia. As well as highly interesting presentations the meeting provided a valuable networking opportunity for industry professionals, academics and researchers.
