Optoelectronic technologies
for the Oil and Gas Industry 2011
Following on from the successful two previous meetings in addressing this rapidly expanding technology area within the oil and gas industry, the 3rd Annual Optoelectronic Technologies for the Oil and Gas Industry Technical Meeting was held for the first time in Bergen, Norway's second largest city, and a centre for the oil and gas sector. The event was co-sponsored by FMC Technologies, The Michelsen Centre, NCE Subsea, Society for Underwater Technology (SUT), Norwegian Petroleum Society and Institute of Physics along with the Offshore Media Group as the official media partner.
Around 110 people attended this annual meeting, which has established itself as an international event with a unique mix of representatives from operators, service companies, subsea systems suppliers, technology providers, R&D institutes and universities. The meeting covered a broad spectrum of optoelectronics technology and highlighted major developments in the technology relevant to current and future oil and gas industry applications. The meeting comprised 2 keynote addresses, 10 technical presentations, 16 scientific posters and 10 tabletop displays, with the main focus on optical sensing. The keynote talks addressed optical communications and the requirement to generate and present useful information as well as the challenges posed by high temperature and high pressure (HPHT), longer tie-back, deeper water and Arctic conditions. Other presentations covered developments in distributed fibre-optical sensing, new optical sensor developments for environmental monitoring and fluid characterisation, subsea fibre-optical architecture and test equipment. The wide ranging topics addressed in the poster and table top demonstrations included; underwater optical communications, condition monitoring a subsea motor, Light-weight carbon cable with fibre optics for offshore hydrocarbon leak detection, permanent reservoir monitoring using fibre-optic seismic and 3D color laser digitization for oil and gas industry inspection and monitoring applications.
The 3rd meeting again provided a unique opportunity for oil and gas industry professionals, technology developers, academics, and researchers to share the latest innovations in this rapidly expanding technology area.
